Preparing for Parenthood

Becoming a parent can be a huge undertaking. It's a life-altering change that is best dealt with advanced preparation, understanding, and patience with your partner and yourself. It's a time in which you prepare your mind, your finances, your home, and your emotions. But more importantly, it's a time for joy, happiness, and familial unity. It's a time for love. Remember that parenthood isn't for the faint of heart. It is for the strong, courageous, and selfless. But don't let that scare or dissuade you. You're probably more prepared for parenthood than you think.

The first step to preparing for parenthood is the acknowledgment and understanding that your life is about to change, if it hasn't already done so. If you're new to parenthood or you'd like a refresher course, it will be beneficial to do some research. Talk to people who are lifelong parents. Ask for tips and advice. Read parenting magazines, books, and websites. Find out everything you can about parenting and some of the issues or experiences that you could face. This isn't meant to overwhelm you. It's meant to give you a starting point, a solid informational parenting foundation.

Raising a child can be financially taxing, even for the financially secure. Budgeting is a great tool to help you financially prepare for parenthood. Allocate a certain amount of money for groceries, clothing, transportation, medical costs, and baby supplies. Make sure you buy your necessities and essentials first, and then you can focus on your immediate wants. It's also a good idea to start and keep a savings account or invest your money. While it's important to have a savings before you bring your child into your home, it's equally important to maintain that savings for the rest of your life. This will be your buffer for when unexpected things occur, like medical needs, schooling, and new clothes and shoes.

While it's not feasible for many families to save a large amount of money, every little bit helps. Even ten dollars a paycheck can add up quickly. Save whatever you can for your future, your family's future. It will give you peace of mind and a sense of security when surprises come into your life, as they always do.

One thing that you may need to sacrifice as a parent is your current lifestyle. It may not work for you to go to the movies or out to dinner as often as you did before you were a parent. It's not just the money issue. It can also be the time issue. You now have the responsibility of caring for your child, and that takes a lot of time. You may be used to a clean and orderly house and car. Again, this will seem nearly impossible to maintain after you begin your family. While this can be stressful at times, it's important to remember, you have something better than a clean car or a clean house. You have a beautiful child to care for and to love unconditionally.

Raising and caring for a child is emotionally draining. You spend most, if not all, of your time concerned about his/her well being. You will put your emotional needs aside so that you can support your child's emotional needs, and then you may need to focus on your partner or spouse. If you feel that your emotional reservoir is too drained, it's important to arrange some personal time. Read a book, go see a movie, exercise, or take a nap. It doesn't matter what you do, just get your emotional well being back to a strong state. The happier you are, the happier parent you'll be.

Parenting requires much sacrifice. But it's worth it to see your child grow, develop a distinct personality, learn from mistakes, and trust your judgment. Parenting may not be easy, but its advantages are numerous. Parenting preparation will not only help you now, but throughout your entire life, as your role as a parent doesn't end when s/he reaches the age of eighteen. You're a parent forever, and s/he will always be your beautiful child.
