  • Therapy During Pregnancy

An unexpected pregnancy can cause some emotional stress, anxiety, fear, sadness, and maybe even some depression. It is important that you identify your feelings and how intense they are. Keeping them to yourself or denying them will only add to the stress you are already feeling. If you don’t currently have a therapist, your health care provider can guide to a list of therapists near you that will best fit your needs.

There are a variety of choices out there, and you will have to decide which choice will benefit you the most. Are you depressed or are you just overwhelmed and need someone that will listen and help you figure things out? A counselor can help you in accepting the fact that you are going to, or have given your baby up for adoption. You will be dealing with a variety of emotions concerning this. You might have some guilt, sadness or a feeling of loss. These would all be normal feelings. Learning how to deal with them and move on with your life would be very beneficial.

A counselor can help you set goals for your next steps in life. Having a plan will help you have something to look forward to. Are you going to continue school, or go to work? Depression can easily take over if there is too much idle time. Counseling can be helpful during pregnancy, and after depending on your needs.

If you are keeping your baby there might still be a need for some counseling, especially if you are going to be a single parent. They can help you set goals and come up with a plan that will work for you, your family, and the baby. You could have some emotional things going on that you need help with. If you are not sure if you need professional help talk with your doctor about your concerns.

If you are struggling with the decisions of keeping the baby or giving it up for adoption you might want to consider getting some professional help. They can help you put things into perspective, weighing the pros and the cons of both situations. This would be especially important if you are not getting support from family, or they are causing you more confusion because of all the different opinions.

There are different types of therapists. There are those that specialize in certain areas. Interpersonal counseling is when they help you learn how to take charge of your life, how to solve problems and setting goals. For deep-seated issues and behaviors with family, or unresolved traumas you might need to see a mental health counselor. There are also group therapy sessions that would be especially helpful if you are giving your baby up for adoption. It gives you an opportunity to voice your feelings, and hear how other women have dealt with theirs.

You need someone that will listen and support you whether it is family, friends or a counselor. Sometimes people that are detached from our circumstances can see things about the situation that we can not see. It is highly effective to have someone from the outside help you see a clear picture of what you are dealing with and what is best for you.
